About the Card

What kind of information will be printed on the card?

Your card number and expiration date will be printed on the card.
Please be reminded your name will not be printed on the card.

Will the information on the card be embossed?

No. Your GAICA Prepaid Card will be issued with printed numbers.

Can I get a spare card?

No, you can't. We will not be able to issue spare cards.

Can I open a joint account for my family or an shared account card?

No, you can't. The card is a only available for individual customers.

Is there an annual fee?

There is no annual fee.

Is there a expiration date for the GAICA Prepaid Card?

Yes, there is. Your GAICA Prepaid Card is valid for 5 years from the month of issuance. Your expiration date can be confirmed on the back of the card.

  • In principle, your card will be automatically renewed from the expiration date. However, if there is no usage for 2 years preceding the expiration date, your card will not be renewed.

Are there any fees for using the card?

There is set fee for loading and using your card. The fee differs depending on whether your GAICA card has the FLEX function or not. Please confirm which card you are using and click on the links below for details.

What is Flex function?

Customers who have a Shinsei PowerFlex account can sign-up for GAICA Flex Prepaid Card through Shinsei PowerDirect (Internet banking). Flex function has the following convenient features:

  • 1. Load foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD) other than JPY.
  • 2. In principle, you will be able to load your card 24/7 and it will be reflected on your account right away.
  • 3. In principle, refunds will also be available 24/7.

You can add this function by applying GAICA or you can add it later.

Are there any conditions for signing up for the Flex function?

Customers signing up for the Flex function need to have an Shinsei PowerFlex account.

What is the difference between applying for the GAICA card by “GAICA Application (With Flex function)” and “Application to add Flex function”

If you are applying for the GAICA card for the first time and require the Flex function, please apply with “GAICA Application (With Flex functionality)”.
If you already have a GAICA card (without Flex Function) and wish to add the Flex function, please apply through “Application to add Flex functionality”. from your Shinsei PowerFlex account.

Application and Issue

Why do I need to submit Individual Number (My Number)?

The GAICA Prepaid Card service allows withdrawals from foreign ATMs, which classifies it as a fund transfer service. According to the Individual number (My Number) system, products or services classified as fund transfer services will be required to confirm the customer’s Individual number (My Number) under the "Act on Submission of Statement of Overseas Wire Transfers for Purpose of Securing Proper Domestic Taxation".

I am not planning to withdraw from an overseas ATM. Do I still need to submit Individual number (My Number)?

Yes, you do. You will still need to submit Individual number (My Number) even if you do not withdraw from an overseas ATM.

I don' know how to upload my ID and Individual number (My Number).

Is there any credit check?

No, there isn't.
However, eligible customers should be over 13 years old* and meet the conditions mentioned below.

  • *When signing up a customer who is a minor, we will also confirm the purpose of transaction and consent from the parental guardian.

Will I be able to issue multiple cards?

No, you won't. We will only be able to issue 1 card per customer.

How long will it take for the GAICA Prepaid Card to arrive?

The card will be delivered in approximately 1 week's time after submitting your identification documents.
However, the issuance of the card may be delayed due to busy sign-up periods and holidays (i.e. Sundays and Sundays, national holidays, and New Year holidays etc.).

Can you send the card to an address other than my home address?

No, we can't. We can only send your card to your home address.

What kind of identification documents are required for signing up?

The following identification documents can be used for signing up. Please choose from any combination from A~C.

  • A) My Number card including photograph (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card)
  • B) Notification Card (of your Individual Number) +on of the flollowing identification documents from below:
    • ① Residence Card (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card) or
    • ② Japanese Driver’s license (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card) or
    • ③ Special permanent resident certificate (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card)
  • C) Residence certificate (issued within the last 6 months) +on of the flollowing identification documents from below:
    • ① Residence Card (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card) or
    • ② Japanese Driver’s license (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card) or
    • ③ Special permanent resident certificate (We will need to confirm both the front and back of the card)

My child will be studying abroad, but can a parental guardian sign-up for a card on behalf of the minor?

No. Your child will be required to sign-up for the card in person.Please have the minor apply upon obtaining consent from the parent or guardian regarding the application and purposes of using the GAICA card.

Will I be able to sign-up for the GAICA Flex Prepaid card for my child with my Shinsei PowerFlex account?

No, you won't. The customer signing up for the GAICA Flex Prepaid Card may only register his/her own Shinsei PowerFlex account.

On loading

How do I load my card?

The loading of your card and when it will be reflected to your blance will differ depending on whether your GAICA card has the Flex function or not. Please confirm which card you are using and click on the links below to confirm the details.

Will there be any interest gained from the loaded JPY/foreign currency balance?

No, there will not. Since the loaded balance is not in the savings accounts or time deposits which the bank offers, there will be not interest gained from the balance.

Which foreign currencies can be loaded to the card?

The following four foreign currencies can be loaded to the card: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD

  • This function is only available for the GAICA Flex Prepaid Card.

Are there any limits to the number of loads that can be made?

No. There are no limits to the number of loads made to the card.

What is the maximum amount for a single load?

The maximum amount for a single load is 1 million JPY per load. If the load is in a foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD), the amount will be equivalent of 1 million JPY based on our foreign currency exchange rate.

Where can I confirm the prepaid card balance?

The prepaid card balance can be confirmed on the balance inquiry menu of the Member-Only Site. This would apply to both GAICA Prepaid Card and GAICA Flex Prepaid Card.

Will I be able to load my card from an overseas ATM?

No. You will not be able to load your card from an overseas ATM.
Loads from the ATM will only be available at ATMs located in Japan.

When will I be able to use the card after loading?

The timing of the load to your card blance will differ depending on whether your GAICA card has the Flex function or not. Please confirm which card you are using and click on the links below for the details.

I have over withdrawn foreign currency from my prepaid card. Can I load that foreign currency back into my card again?

No, you can't. You can not load foreign currency cash back into your card.

What is the total amount I can load into my account?

If the card balance exceeds 2 million JPY or the equivalent, the excess amount will refunded to the customer’s designated bank account within 60 days.

How much is the minimum amount I can load?

JPY: 1 yen
USD: 1 cent
EUR: 1 EUR
GBP: 1 pence
AUD: 1 cent

Is there anything I need to do when my card arrives?

You will need to activate your card before using it.

Where can I use my card?

You will be able to use your card within your card balance on Visa and Plus ATM located overseas and at Visa affiliated stores domestically (Japan) and overseas. However, there are some affiliated stores in which you will not be able to use your card.

Can I withdraw cash from a Japanese ATM?

No, you can't. You are not able to withdraw cash from Japanese ATMs.

Can I withdraw cash from an overseas ATM?

Yes, you can. You are able to withdraw in the local currency from all Visa and Plus ATM locations. For more details on ATM locations, please confirm the Visa homepage.

Can I choose the number of payments when shopping?

No, you can't. You can only choose the payment method for "single payment".

Where can I confirm the card usage record?

The card usage records for the past 6 months can be confirmed from the card usage detail menu on the GAICA Member-Only Site. The usage details can be downloaded in PDF format.

Can I refund the balance from my card back to my bank account?

Yes, you can refund the balance of your card. However, the refund method and fees will differ depending on whether your GAICA card has the Flex function or not. Please confirm which card you are using and click on the links below for the details.

Can I have the balance refunded to an bank account other than mine?

No. We can only refund to your bank account.

I have GAICA Prepaid Card without a IC chip. Can I use it for shopping in Japan?

Yes, you can.
Customers who have issued their cards before June 25, 2017 will have their Domestic (Japan) shopping limit set at JPY 0. Please login to the Member-Only Site and change the credit limit.

What is Visa payWave?

Visa payWave is a fast and secure payment method which a reader confirms the IC chip on your card. You can use the GAICA Prepaid Card like electronic cash.

  • Some stores may require your signature or PIN for further verification.

Where can I use Visa payWave?

The number of stores using Visa payWave is steadily growing. If it is not available, the traditional payment method of swiping your card is available at Visa affiliated stores.

I was asked for a signature. However, the card holder’s name is printed as "GAICA MEMBER". What signature should I use?

Please sign your name as you have signed it on the back of your card.

Can I use this card for online shopping?

Yes, you can. Please choose "Visa" as the credit card brand and enter your GAICA card number and expiration date. Please enter the cardholder’s name as "GAICA MEMBER".

What name should I enter on the cardholder’s name when shopping online?

Please enter the cardholder’s name as "GAICA MEMBER".
Please use the expiration date on your GAICA card.

I could not use my card when shopping online domestically (Japan).

There are some Visa affiliated online stores in which you are not able to use your GAICA Prepaid Card.

  • Note on Overseas sites
    Even if the site is Japanese and the payment is in JPY, sites such as Amazon and Google may be treated as an international site. Please note the limit for domestic and overseas payments are different.

Are there any stores domestically or overseas in which I won' be able to use the GAICA Prepaid Card?

You will not be able to use your card at affiliated stores for the following:

  • ・Gas stations
  • ・Highway/Expressway tolls
  • ・Shopping in flight/on a ship
  • ・Security deposit payment for hotels and car rentals. However, you will be able to pay for the actual bill.

When will the payment be settled (withdrawn from your card balance) when using the card for online purchases?

The payment will be settled (withdrawn from your card balance) within mere seconds after clicking on the purchase or buy button. After clicking on the purchase or buy button, the purchase data will be transmitted to confirm the customer’s balance.

  • ① If there is a sufficient balance, the payment will be processed and the amount will be withdrawn right away. The purchase will also be confirmed on the shopping site.
  • ② If there is insufficient balance on the account, the payment will not be processed and the shopping site will also reflect failed purchase.

Can I make automatic withdrawal payments for my mobile phone bill?

No. You will not be able to make automatic payments.

  • *Some examples of automatic payments you will not be able to use:
    • ・Monthly mobile phone bills
    • ・Public utility bills
    • ・Newspaper and magazine subscriptions

You will only be able to make on the spot payments.

On general problems

I have forgotten my user ID and/or password for the Member-Only Site.

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.

I entered the wrong PIN several times and cannot use my card.

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.

I have forgotten my PIN for my card.

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance. We will send your new PIN to your registered address. For security reasons, we cannot inform your new PIN by telephone, e-mail or through the Internet.

I cannot receive e-mail with my registered e-mail address.

Firstly, please login to the APLUS Member-Only Site to check whether the registered e-mail address is correct. Secondly, please check if you have not blocked e-mail domains such as "@aplus.co.jp". If this does not solve your problem, please contact GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.

My card is broken. Where can I get a new card?

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk to have your card reissued.

  • *A JPY1,000 + tax fee will be applied when reissuing the card.

I lost my card/My card has been stolen.

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk right away.
In addition, please file a claim at the nearest police station. If you are overseas, please file a claim with the local police.

  • *A 1000JPY+tax fee will be applied if you wish to have a new card reissued.

I lost my card/My card has been stolen overseas. Can you send the card overseas?

Yes. Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk to have your card sent by Visa card’s "Emergency overseas card reissue service".

ATM does not respond after inserting the card.

Please push the cancel menu on the ATM, and start from the beginning. If the card still does not work, please contact the local ATM operator directly. The service times may vary due to country and financial institution.

I cannot use my card even though I loaded it.

Please confirm the following:

【Have you activated your card?】

You will need to activate your card in order to start using your card. If you have not activated your card, please do so on the “アクティベイト” (Activate your card) menu of the Member-Only Site.

【Insufficient balance】

The balance may be insufficient. Please check your card balance on the “残高照会” (Card Balance) menu of the Member-Only Site.

【Insufficient balance due to time lag for GAICA card without Flex function】

Depending on the time of the day, the transfer for the loaded amount may not yet be reflected to your card balance.
The uploaded balance will be reflected on 10 a.m, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Japan Standard Time(JST) on business days. Please confirm your card balance on the Member-Only Site. If you load your card outside of business hours, you balance will be reflected 10 a.m. (JST) the following business day.

【Insufficient balance due to time lag for GAICA Flex Prepaid Card】

The load will not be completed if the balance of the Shinsei PowerFlex account is insufficient when loading the designated amount on the Member-Only Site. Please check your Shinsei Powerflex account balance and load again.
In addition, if the Internet banking service (Shinsei PowerDirect) is undergoing system maintenance, there is a possibility that even if you have loaded your card from the “チャージ” (load) menu on the Member-Only Site the load may not be reflected. If this should be the case, please confirm the balance of the Shinsei Powerflex account and load your card again.

【Exceeding Credit limit】

You will not be able to use your card if the limit is set at 0 yen or if you have exceeded the credit limit. Please change the credit limit on the Member-Only Site.

Others

I received an e-mail saying that my balance is insufficient.

Due to payment processing method of overseas stores, there are some cases in which the stores will claim for the difference in the exchange rate on a later date other than the day the payment was made. Please confirm the “残高照会” (Card Balance) menu on the APLUS Member-Only Site and load the difference on to the card. The card cannot be used if the balance is negative.

What is the card spending limit?

The limit will differ depending on whether your GAICA card has the Flex function or not. Please confirm which card you are using and click on the links below to confirm the details.

Is the limit for overseas ATM withdrawals same as the limit for shopping?

The credit limits for overseas ATM withdrawals and shopping are different and the limits can be set separately.

Can you change the spending limit?

The spending limit for overseas ATM withdrawals, shopping overseas, domestic (Japan) shopping can be set separately.
The spending limits mentioned above can be changed respectively to one time/per day/per month.
Please make the changes on APLUS Member-Only Site at the “利用限度額変更” (Change of limit) menu.

Can I switch my GAICA Prepaid Card without Flex function to GAICA Flex Prepaid Card?

Customers with Shinsei PowerFlex accounts can switch to the GAICA Flex Prepaid Card from internet banking.
Please login to Shinsei PowerDirect (Internet banking) and sign-up from the GAICA sign-up page.

How can I change my PIN?

We will need to reissue a new card when changing your PIN.
Please contact GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance. A fee of JPY 1,000 + tax will apply when issuing a new card.

Can I get new card?

Yes, you can. We can reissue a new card. Please contact GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.
A fee of JPY 1,000 + tax fee will be applied when issuing a new card and the fee will be withdrawn from the card balance.
If the card balance is insufficient an extra loading will be required.

I would like you to stop sending e-mails.

We apologize for the inconvenience but we cannot stop sending e-mails. E-mails will be sent for notification of usage (effective in preventing unauthorized withdrawals) and important notices for system failures and/or maintenance information.

What do I do when there has been a change in my travel plans?

You will need to update the changes on the top menu “各種変更TOP” (Change of details TOP) of the Member-Only Site. You will need to register the changes before using your card.

What do I do when the intended country to visit has changed?

Please change the information on to the Member-Only Site.

There has been a change in purpose of transaction (purpose of use). Where can I update these changes?

You will need to update the changes on the top menu “各種変更TOP” (Change of details TOP) of the Member-Only Site. You will need to register the changes before using you card.

I changed my address/telephone number. Where can I update these changes?

Please login to the Member-Only Site to change your address and telephone number on the “各種変更TOP” (Change of details TOP) menu.

I have a card without IC chip. I want to switch the card with IC chip.

Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.
We will ressue you a new card a IC chip. You can use your card until you receive your new card.

  • We will send you a new card to your current address. Please note that you cannot receive it in case you are in abroad.

The Following error message shows up, what should I do? : “銀行口座が受払停止状態です” (Bank account has stopped payment)

The balance of your PowerFlex account is insufficent. This error message shows up when the designated currency’s amount to load is insufficient in the PowerFlex accountholder’s account. Please confirm the balance of the designated currency.

  • If the balance is sufficient there may be other reason(s) for the restriction. Please contact the GAICA Customer Service Desk for assistance.

How do I cancel my card?

You can apply for cancellation of your card on the Member-Only Site.
